Born in 1969, the Belgian designer Xavier Lust has been conducting design research on furniture and accessories oriented towards industrial production since 1990. Conceived to balance function and looks, high-tech and high-touch, Lust’s projects are always based on the conviction that innovation and experimentation are the protagonists of any creative process, to find solutions that address the quality of form of the finished product as well as the technical aspects of its production processes. The leaning towards apparent semantic simplicity in Lust’s works is actually the result of a slow procedure of continuous shaping of surfaces, employed to generate surprising, essential useful objects capable of “crossing time.” This is the case of the Oudjat bench, actually a typology that combines the console with a seat, thus inventing a new genre through the use of bronzed brass sheet that makes this item of furniture plastic and monolithic, like a domestic sculpture.
Classe 1969 Xavier Lust, designer belga, dal 1990 si dedica ad una ricerca progettuale tesa a definire mobili e accessori tesi verso la serialità della produzione industriale. Pensati per rispondere al binomio funzione/estetica, high tech/high touch, i progetti di Lust si basano sempre sulla convinzione che l’innovazione e la sperimentazione siano protagonisti di ogni processo creativo, per trovare soluzioni che rispondano sia alla qualità dell’aspetto formale del prodotto finito, sia agli aspetti tecnico-esecutivi legati ai processi di produzione. La tensione verso un’apparente semplicità del segno di Lust è in realtà un processo lento di modellazione di superfici continue chiamate a definire oggetti d’uso sorprendenti, essenziali e in grado di “attraversare il tempo”. È il caso della ‘panca’ Oudjat, una tipologia che unisce la consolle a una seduta e che inventa quindi una nuova tipologia attraverso l’impiego di una lamiera di ottone bronzato che rende plastico e monolitico, compiuto in sé, il pezzo d’arredo offerto come scultura domestica.
